APL to open 43-acre intermodal site at CenterPoint Joliet UP/BSNF junction

GLOBAL shipping line APL, a unit of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), will increase its intermodal capacity with the purchase of 43 acres in Joilet, Illinois from CenterPoint Properties.

The land will be used to develop its largest intermodal container terminal in the US within the CenterPoint Intermodal Center to be positioned as the carrier's Chicago Global Gateway. It is "advantageously located" near the Union Pacific and BNSF rail terminals and customer warehouse/distribution centres, said an APL statement.

The new container facility to be ready in December and will house the regional operations team. It will boast automated gate technology, reefer servicing and equipment maintenance facilities. The yard will eventually replace its Chicago terminal it has run since 1985.
