'K' Line takes full control of German heavy-lift SAL

JAPAN's "K" Line has acquired a further 50 per cent stake in Germany's heavy lift specialist SAL Group (Schiffahrtskontor Altes Land) to take on full control as of June 30, following its acquisition less than four years ago in a 50 per cent stake.

It previously shared ownership with the Heinrich family management who founded the shipping company in 1980 and the Danish Rolner family. Lars Rolner managing partner will be retained as CEO at SAL's head office in Steinkirchen, northern Germany.

With the oil and gas industry growth predicted to grow, SAL's recent acquisition of type 183 class heavy-lift carriers Svenja and Lone's cranes capable of lifting up to 2,000 tons will make a good addition to its MPV fleet of 8,900 to 12,500 dwt.

It is hoped to follow K Line's strategy "to create a new synergy with the offshore support vessel and drill ship business department," according to a report from UK-based WorldCargo News.
